The 4th UTokyo-Tsinghua Joint Multidisciplinary Symposium @ Tsinghua University

The opening ceremony for the 4th UTokyo-Tsinghua Joint Multidisciplinary Symposium was held in Tsinghua University on May 28. Prof. Naoto Sekimura, Vice President and Deputy Director of the Division of International Affairs, together with Prof. Qikun Xue, Vice President of Tsinghua University, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. More than 200 students and researchers from related fields attended the ceremony, the plenary session and parallel sessions that followed.

 

Prof. Xue started the plenary session with an opening remark and explanation on the aim and the ideas of the bilateral collaboration. Subsequently in his speech, Prof. Sekimura reviewed the establishment of the strategic partnership agreement in 2018 and then introduced the framework of the joint education and research program between UTokyo and Tsinghua initiated in 2019. He emphasized that it would further facilitate collaborative advanced research, enhance the mobility of faculty, administrative staff and students, and provide cross-cultural experiences for students at various levels.

 

After the opening ceremony, the plenary session was held. Four keynote speeches were presented at the plenary session, with the topics as follows: China Low Carbon Energy Economy Transformation; Climate change: challenges and opportunities; Towards the Third Generation AI; Towards a Renewed Understanding of Japanese Early Modern History from the East Asian Perspective: Civic Rule in Edo Japan and the East Asian World Order.

 

Many researchers and students from both universities listened studiously to the four speeches and actively participated in the lively discussion that followed. In the evening on May 28, Vice President Qikun Xue hosted the Welcome Reception attended by more than 150 faculty members, researchers and students from the two universities.

 

Eleven separate parallel sessions were held as parts of the joint symposium. Most of them followed the plenary session, which are listed below. The sessions of "Climate Change" and "Artificial Intelligence" were added to the existing wide variety of academic interactions, strengthening the occurrence of multidiscipline academic exchanges.
