Online Sakura Science Program for University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka

Global Connection

March 17, 2021

Okayama University Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science held an online student exchange program, "Online Exchange Program between Okayama University & University of Ruhuna ‒ Research Experiences in the field of Environmental Management at Okayama University for Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka" on March 1 and 2, 2021, which was financially supported by JST Sakura Science Plan. Three professors (Professor Maeda, Professor Mori and Associate Professor Somura), 13 students from Okayama University, Professor Leelamanie and 8 students from University of Ruhuna participated in the event.

On the first day, we showed participants the video about research and education activities in our graduate school, which was newly made for this online event. Then, Associate Professor Somura and Professor Leelamanie gave their invited talks, followed by fruitful discussions for our future collaboration. On the second day, we organized a student presentation session. Total of 14 students gave their research presentations from both universities. Through this online event, Sri Lankan students learned about our research works and the latest technologies. They may be motivated to study at our graduate school in the future. Students from Okayama University had good chances to know environmental problems in Sri Lanka, and to rethink of their research themes by receiving unexpected questions from the Sri Lankan side. People in different countries have different thinking ways. We also discussed our joint research projects.

In concluding, we were able to showcase some education and research activities in our graduate school to Sri Lankan students, and to have nice and deep discussions regarding our collaboration. We will promote exchange programs for faculty members and students between two countries in the future.
