15th Japan-Vietnam Joint Seminar
October 20, 2017
On September 16 - 17, the 15th Japan-Vietnam Joint Seminar was held at Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City. This was the 15th time for an event that has been held every year since 2002, aiming at strengthening the ties and promoting the research exchange between KIT and universities in Vietnam.
The exchange areas of the seminar, which started from the field of Chemistry, have been expanding in recent years. This year, participants from KIT included 35 faculty members and students from Applied Biology, Biochemistry, Macromolecular Chemistry, and Information Science. From Vietnam, 100 persons participated from institutions such as Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho University and Hanoi Medical University.
This seminar, not only promotes interaction among researchers, but since 2013 it has also been featuring poster sessions by students staying in Vietnam as part of the Global Internship Program, thus playing a significant educational role as well.
Furthermore, this year was the last participation for Professor Takaaki Miyata, faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, who for a long time played an instrumental role in the exchange between KIT and universities of Vietnam. To commemorate his contribution, a special lecture was given by Prof. Miyata at the beginning of the seminar, entitled "My Journey from the War-torn Viet-Nam to the International World of Science and Technology ". Participants had the opportunity to hear Prof. Miyata's memories from his time as a student as well as his 40 year long research life.
After the seminar, a social gathering was held with our graduates from Vietnam and the rest of the participants. The seminar provided a venue for academic exchange as well as the opportunity for our graduates, faculty and staff to connect.
