December 07, 2018

Soka University Faculty of Law third-year student, Emily Naomi Okabe was selected to represent Japan at the "Girls 20 Global Summit Argentina 2018," in Buenos Aires, Argentina held from October13th to 20th. This is the fourth straight year a student from Soka University was selected to represent Japan.

This year will mark the ninth time the summit will be held and women representatives from 25 countries and regions of G20 member countries will gather this time. One person from each country and region will be selected after screening and interviews of 18 to 23-year-old applicants.

The Girls 20 Summit is an International Women's Conference launched in 2009 by the "Clinton Global Initiative," established by former United States of America President Bill Clinton. It aims to prepare a joint statement on the subject "Creating new jobs for 100 million women by 2025" and a proposal for the leaders of each of the G20 countries.

The representatives started their discussions online 3 months before the summit and put together their proposal for the summit in Argentina. There were 5 groups under the following themes: provide safe access to inclusive participation in digital spaces, foster access to STEAM education and careers for women and girls, provide financial access and literacy through an intersectional lens, implement strong legal mechanisms to prevent and eliminate gender-based violence, and advance access to quality education in rural communities through both formal and informal means. At the Girls 20 Summit 2018, discussions were based on the presentations of each group, and the representatives finalized their communiqué.

On October 19th, the delegates delivered the 2018 Communiqué to Ambassador Pedro Villagra Delgado, Argentina's G20 Sherpa.
